Brad Deringer has his Canadian Avalanche Association Industry Training Program Level I and assists with data collection necessary for the production of the Valdez avalanche bulletin. He designed and produced our t-shirts.
Brian Newman is the forecaster at Gulmarg, the massive Kashmiri ski area which has the highest top terminal on the planet at 13,000+ feet. He also is an avalanche forecaster with the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council. Chris Shelly is the avalanche forecaster for Valdez's H2O Heli-ski Guides and New Zealand's Ohau resort. He has also been Moonlight Basin's avalanche forecaster, managed the Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center and Big Sky Resort, guided for Mt Bailey Snow Cats and patrolled at Heavenly and Silverton. Chris has a Masters of Education and the Canadian Avalanche Association Level II. He is a professional athlete for Dynastar and founded the Moonlight Basin Avalanche School. Daniel Curry is the chief software engineer responsible for the design and implementation of Avert Online Snow Science Systems, the easiest-to-use and most thorough data collection and business management system for the snow science industry. With his Masters in Computer Science, major in Human Computer Interface, Dan places special emphasis on the usability of his innovative software products.
Dan VanDerMuellen grew up Idaho tough wrangling, ski racing, and leading long wilderness horse pack trips. He spends more nights out in the snow and mountains than anyone has since the Gold Rush. He has worked as an avalanche forecaster for Valdez Heli-Camps and H2O Heli Guides. Dan is an AIARE Instructor and is undertaking his Canadian Avalanche Association Level II.
Don Sharaf is the avalanche forecaster for Valdez Heli Ski Guides, owner of the American Avalanche Institute and president of Teton Avalanche Consulting. He is a certified AMGA ski mountaineering guide, has his Canadian Avalanche Association Level II, is an American Avalanche Association certified avalanche educator and AvPro course leader and has presented avalanche research at the International Snow Science Workshop. Don is a ropes expert and in the summer can be found suspended from giant windmill blades hundreds of feet in the air.
Elise Leahy instructs the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends. She has a degree in Geography and has the Canadian Avalanche Association Level I. She has worked the industry contracts which fund our avalanche center. Elise is a biathlon competitor and a commercial fisherman. She is a pilot and travels from Fairbanks in her own airplane.
Gabe Monroe ____________________________________________________________________________ Jamie Pierce is a fully certified UIAGM, IFMGA and AMGA mountain guide. He is an American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education instructor and has been the Snow Safety Program Director for the Coeur Alaska Kensington Gold Mine north of Juneau. Jeff Levison is completing his Engineering degree. He has guided for Valdez's H2O Heli-ski Guides and is an avid ski-mountaineer. Jeff is an instructor for the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education and works on the industry contracts which fund our avalanche center. He currently serves as the Director of Northern Operations. Jenna Boisvert is a wildlife biologist, devoted backcountry skier and enthusiastic Alaskan mountain lover. She instructs the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends helping other women also feel confident, independent, and empowered with their own backcountry skills. Jenna is a certified rafting guide and Wilderness First Responder. She likes dancing and encounters with wolverines. Jennifer Weber is an American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education instructor and teaches the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends. She is an Emergency Trauma Technician active with the Valdez Fire Department Search and Rescue Team and the Valdez Snowmachine Club Search and Rescue Team. Jennifer's impressive fund-raising enables the continued production of the free Valdez Chugach avalanche bulletin. Jesse Passin works for DOT and lives at Thompson Pass. Jesse is an avid rider and has made a number of Alaskan snowmachine movies. Jodee Goldsberry is an Adjunct Professor with the University of Alaska Southeast Outdoor Studies program and instructs the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends. She has the Canadian Avalanche Association Level I and is a Canadian National Team river kayaking champion. Jordan Pond has a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Utah. He working on his Canadian Avalanche Association Level II and assists with the production of the free Valdez Chugach avalanche bulletin. Kirsti Jurica is an avalanche forecaster for Alaska DOT, the City of Cordova and the Cordova hydro-electric power company. She has her Canadian Avalanche Association Level II and has presented avalanche research at the International Snow Science Workshop. She is both a hydrologist and a native peoples and wildlife scientist.
Laura LeBlanc is a Master’s student in Glaciology at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks studying icequakes and ice velocity of Bering Glacier. She patrols at Crystal Mountain and is an avid skier and climber in the Eastern Alaska Range and Chugach Mountains. Her snow profile work is meticulous. Lori and Randy Zakcaruk have taught thousands of snowmachiners avalanche skills training. Mark Kelly is an AMGA certified ski mountaineering guide, Backcountry Access athlete and American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education instructor. He has taught thousands of students avalanche avoidance and rescue. Visit Mark's ski guiding website Merreley Donohue Wisner is a keen backcountry skier and assistant AIARE instructor. She runs her own massage therapy practice, has a two young children and serves on the board of the Alaska Avalanche Information Center. Her fund-raising enables the continued production of the free Valdez Chugach avalanche bulletin. Merreley instructs avalanche awareness classes and the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends. Mike Buck has his Master's of Education and is the nation's first Avalanche Research and Education snowmachine specific instructor. He is a Valdez legend renown to be tougher, stronger and wider ranging than a wolverine. His unparalleled snowmachine expertise traversing Chugach glaciers and mountains from the Wrangels to Denali is immensely valuable as a Valdez Snowmachine Club search and rescue team leader, program coordinator and lead instructor. Mike is an expert river runner and owner of Keystone Whitewater Adventures.
Pete Carter is the DOT avalanche forecaster at Thompson Pass. He and his wife are professional members of both the American and Canadian Avalanche Associations and the first to have climbed north America's two highest mountains in one summer. Pete serves as a board member and is the director of forecasting for our organization, in addition to being a certified AIARE instructor.
Sarah Carter is an American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education instructor and teaches the Women's Backcountry Travel Weekends. She has been Valdez's H2O Heli-ski Guides avalanche forecaster, patrolled in Alaska and Canada, presented two posters at the International Snow Science Workshop and promotes avalanche education throughout Alaska. Sarah serves as a board member and is the education director for our organization.
Sean Wisner has been active with avalanche forecasting, education and rescue since 1988. He is a fire officer and rescue technician for Alyeska Pipeline and volunteers as a firefighter/EMT/rescue technician for the City of Valdez Fire Department. He is a team leader and instructor for the Valdez Search and Rescue Team. Sean has worked for a number of years as a helicopter ski guide in Valdez, as a high altitude mountain guide on Denali (20,320') and Aconcagua (22,841'), as a snowmachine tour guide and as a whitewater raft guide across the state. Sean currently serves as the executive director of our board, as an instructor for our classes, and as the rescue coordinator for our organization.
Steve Witsoe has a degree in Engineering. He is the Cordova DOT avalanche forecaster as well as for the City of Cordova and the Cordova hydro-electric power company. He has his Canadian Avalanche Association Level II, his American Avalanche Association AvPro and has presented avalanche research at the International Snow Science Workshop. Steve is an active member of the Cordova Ski Club.
Tamar Young has a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, is an avalanche forecaster with Alaska Avalanche Specialists and an avalanche instructor with the Alaska Mountain Safety Center. He is a mountaineering instructor and lead rigger with the Sitka Mountain Rescue group. Tucker Chenoweth has a degree in Environmental Science and a nine year ski patrol career. He is a Denali National Park Mountaineering Ranger, a job which has taken him to such exotic locales as the Kitchatna Spires, Mt. Huntington and Mt. Hunter. Tucker has taken the AMGA ski mountaineering program and worked as a ski guide, in addition to serving as the operations director for the Alaska Avalanche School. Tim Brown is an AMGA certified ski guide and American Institute for Avalanche Education and Research instructor.
Tom Mattice is the City of Juneau Disaster Manager and avalanche forecaster. He is the executive director of the Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center. |
