The American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education (AIARE) hosted the first ITC in Alaska February 16-28 in Valdez. Instructors Ben Pritchett and Tom Murphy taught twelve avalanche educators from Alaska, Colorado, and New Zealand. The three day course was a huge success, delivering up to date avalanche education information and techniques. Ten Alaska Avalanche Information Center instructors attended the class in their ongoing quest for progressive avalanche education and resources.
AIARE Level 1
The American Institute for Avalanche Research & Education (AIARE) held their first Level 1 in Alaska February 20-22 in Valdez. Tom Murphy with assistance from Alaska Avalanche Information Center instructors led the class.
AIARE Level 2
The Alaska Avalanche Information Center was proud to host a full AIARE Level 2 class March 8-11 in Valdez. Taught by Margaret Wheeler (UIAGM guide) and Tim Brown (AMGA guide), the class could not have asked for four days of better weather. Backcountry decision makers from many communities in south central Alaska were exposed to this first step toward the professional side of avalanche safety. From companion rescue to analyzing snow instability, students and instructors enjoyed the fun of avalanche education.
